Position: Communication and Advocacy Expert

Overall Objective and Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of the Communication and Advocacy Expert is to design an advocacy and communication strategy for Family Planning (FP) and Maternal Newborn Child Health (MNCH) priorities in Ethiopia. Within this deliverable, the Expert will be responsible for the following key tasks:

  • Provide understanding and learnings on advocacy and communication strategys within the Ethiopia FP and MNCH context;
  • Support in the planning and implementation of multiple co-design platforms (workshops) with the aim of including key stakeholders in the strategy design, feedback provision and validation;
  • Support in the identification and mapping of stakeholders for participation in the multiple workshops;
  • Lead and support (as necessary) in the development of materials for the multiple workshops;
  • Co-lead presentation of materials during the workshop and facilitate discussions amongst the stakehdolers with the aim of identifying and vetting FP and MNCH advocacy priroties;
  • Ensure effective communication, partnerships networking and collaboration between the key actors in the design and validation stage;
  • Design the advocacy and communication strategy based on the validated advocacy targets to include advocacy and communication tactics, implementation plan, required resources, potential partners, timeline, etc
  • Ensure documentation of the design process,  capture generated evidences and learnings focused on advocacy and communication;
  • Accountable for developing materials such as briefing notes, presentations, reports, etc to clients and ACE management as required;

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Educational background in Communications, Media Relations, Journalism, Advocacy, Public Relations, Public Health, and other related fields;
  • At least 13 years (for Bachelor’s) or 10 years (for Master’s) of combined professional work experience in designing advocacy and communication strategies in the health sector; prior experience in FP/MNCH advocacy and communication is an asset;
  • Extensive knowledge of the local communication and advocacy ecosystem and the Ethiopian Healthcare system;
  • Experience and proven ability to develop and implement effective communication strategies to achieve advocacy goals;
  • Demonstratable track record in advocacy/lobbying and communication roles.

  • Communication: Ability to present deliverables to a wide range of audience in a tailored manner; Also able to communicate effectively in English and Amharic (verbal and written)
  • Stakeholder management: Excellent in building and managing relationships, including the ability to navigate complex political environments along with experience and network within the health sector
  • Team Building: Strong team player with outstanding team management skills, ability to influence and coach team members; ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • Analytics: Strong analytical, problem-solving, strategic planning and decision-making capabilities; ability to break down and solve problems through quantitative thinking and analysis
